Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I'm about 75% through The Disorganized Mind, and haven't started doing the exercises yet (typical ADHD behavior, right?) but I can safely say that this book does have some helpful suggestions for compensatory strategies. However, all of these are cast through the lens of the author's "clients;" all of which are upper-middle class/top earner types who can afford an ADHD coach.Expect to hear long-winded tales of people who have live-in nannies, lament their friends don't want to accompany them on their frequent vacations due to ADHD related outbursts, or rely to much on their personal assistant. In fact, one of the author's suggest strategies is to actually HIRE a personal assistant! Who has the funds for that? There isn't one lick of advice tailored to everyday working folks struggling to get their symptoms under control. To get anything out of this book, you'll have to work around the descriptions of her client's success and lifestyle to find the core strategies that are offered. The author even goes on at length about her Ivy League education and her world-traveling family. That's great that the author was born into a family that offered her the luxury to pursue a secondary education for years and years, and she'd seen a good chunk of the world before that, but I didn't purchase this book to listen to the author brag.If you grew up poor or don't make a six-figure income, the stories in this book can become infuriating as your lack of sympathy grows stronger. If you can fight past those feelings though, there are some good ideas to find.

I got this for kindle. It might be helpful for some, but not for me. I guess my expectations for this book were different than what the author intended it for. The first couple of chapters the author goes on about her reason for wanting to be a coach, and then her research at various universities etc. It's very lengthy and wordy, teaching first how ADHD is usually coached, then the author goes on how to self-coach. I was expecting a simpler format with easy ways to organize my day, not to psychoanalyze my ADHD and learn useless extras. If you have this condition and like to get to the point without all the extra stuff losing your attention, skip this book. I can't get through it, so I requested a refund.

The first two chapters are a shameless promotion for the author regarding why the reader should hire the author to help them. If you’re thinking of the possibility that you might have ADHD you can avoid the book and instead google a checklist that will list symptoms. The third chapter is titled “Self-Coaching,” so I was truly thinking that this chapter would offer insights on how one could self-coach around managing one’s day or organizing projects if you think you have ADHD symptoms. Oddly, in this chapter the author discusses how she worked with her own clients and then offers the comment that “since other people’s routines can be useless for you, you need to create your own strategy.” Yet, the author does not even in the Self-Coaching chapter explore how you can create your own strategy. This book I can imagine is brilliant in that I can see how readers would be lead after reading this book that they do indeed need to hire the author to be their personal coach. If you’re looking for an explanation of how you need to hire an ADHD coach, this is the book for you. If you’re looking for insight on how to better manage your life if you think you have ADHD symptoms, you’ll not find that in this book.PS I also like the author have an Ivy League degree and I found it somewhat shameless the number of times she mentions she has a Harvard degree. It has successfully encouraged me to not mention my own Ivy degree as I try to sell my own services - it’s a bit tasteless.

The writer spends too much time talking about the value of her profession. Is is tiresome to read. Some helpful tips, so three stars

Gave real tangible ways to change behaviors. Also communicated that even with appropriate medication proactive effort is required daily by ADD/ADHD Person or we automatically default to old habits. Most helpful book I've read. I would however recommend a revised edition to update terminology and usages of computers and iPhones.

This is one of the best books for Adult ADHD I've read. And I've read a lot.Going through the coaching process and getting to the details of how the improvements are made was useful. The coaching examples are perhaps the best part of the book. Examples of Time Mismanagement, Procrastination, and Distractibility solutions were particularly relevant for me since these aren't really improved using medication. But also covered were Impulsivity and Transitions. There are also several chapters on home, work health and relationships with other people.

For those of us with ADHD/ADD, this book was not written in such a way that keeps me focused long enough to pay attention what is being said. While it "may" offer some useful suggestions (I don't know this to be the case), I couldn't concentrate long enough to find out what they were.

This book really explains the science behind why someone with ADHD does the things they do. It gives concrete examples and a solid plan for overcoming the challenges that ADHD brings to your life, and is very centered on making the plan personalized to your own situation, rather than taking a 'one size fits all' approach.
